I just stumbled on these documents about the FBI investigation of Einstein. (released through the Freedom of Information Act)
Just a question - was he ever a member of the Communist party or come out publicly as a communist sympathizer?

    Don't think so. But physicists were generally suspect following the execution of the Rosenbergs for espionage.

    Einstein hadn't turned out to be exactly in love with the Bomb, so they came after him.
